The type of books Nana reads changed A LOT over the last 3 years, but there’re a few books that stand the test of time, and this Usborne “The Very First Book of Things to Spot” series is one of those.

The whole series of “The Very First Book of Things to Spot” is a set of board books with very simple and colourful objects that are appealing to babies and toddlers. I love the thick cardboard pages as they are very easy for a toddler to flip on their own! This is how we read the same book at different ages:

Before 1 Year Old

  • Introduce vocabularies of things, colours and shapes, point to the pictures as we talk along;

1-2 Years Old

  • Ask questions in a full sentence like “Where is the cat?” and let Nana point to the right picture (try saying, “oh is that a cat” while pointing at the right picture instead of “this is wrong” as positive reinforcement);
  • Include counting in questions;
  • Include adjectives, prepositions and comparison like “what is that on/under the bed?” “Which owl is the biggest?”;
  • Spot the hidden ones (Nana LOVE this the most!!) at the corner, in the basket or in the wardrobe!!

3 Years Old

  • Let the child ask the questions, you would be surprised how much they actually learnt/copied from your conversations!!
  • Storytelling – Let’s be a bit more imaginative and tell a story from each page! “It’s a rainy day, every little animal put on the raincoat, rainboots and brings an umbrella to the school, but, there’s one of them who seems forgotten the umbrella….”

The series is available in different languages and we have one in English and one in Chinese (gifted by my sister), but I really don’t think that language of the book matters at all, hubby and I talk the same book in different languages (Nana is a trilingual child) which I feel it’s even better as she can associate concepts between different languages!

Nana has just started asking questions and storytelling with these books so we will probably keep spending quite a lot of time with these books, definitely worth having a copy of our own!
