DIY Felt Passport Holder with Love Knot

My parents inspired me a lot in handcrafting, both of them are tailors (though my mother chose to be a stay home mom after being a mother) and I was very lucky to start learning sewing and crafting when I was really young.I always want to make something for them but DIY for them, especially my mom is tough, not that because she’s picky but it’s just me running out of gift ideas after n pairs of earrings,  20 wallets and another 30 bags that we got her over the years. So when I was sending mom and dad to the airport after their trip to Singapore, I thought, a passport holder would be a good idea!!

Passport holder is really easy to make as all you need to know is how to sew a straight line!! I picked a thick felt sheet with a floral pattern to give the passport holder a bit oriental look and added also a love knot as the button. The double love knot is probably the only and most tricky part of the project, it took me only 10 minutes to finish the knot but I literally spent 3 nights to test and try out all combinations until I got the one I really like lol!

Steps:

  1. Cut the felt sheet into corresponding components;
  2. Make the button by combining a double love knot and button knots (anyone interested in a tutorial?);
  3. On the wrong side of the front cover, pin the knot at the middle of the right side of the front cover, sew the right passport sleeve;
  4. Sew the boarding pass pocket onto the card pocket;
  5. Sew the card pocket to the left side of front cover;
  6. Hand sew the magnetic snap button to the love knot and the front cover of the passport holder;
  7. Seal the sides of the holder with leather seal (to prevent unravelling as the top layer of this patterned felt is actually fabric, it also stiffened the material a bit to give a better finish look)

Love how the felt pattern and love knot come together…my mom won’t be getting it until the next time we meet but I am sure she will love this little handcrafted gift lol
